UN International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence based on Religion or Belief

Prayer for the URC
to mark the UN International Day
commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence
based on Religion or Belief

Dear <<First Name>>,

We all value living in an open and free society where our various rights are protected by law.  Freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly, and the right to freedom of association are interdependent, interrelated, and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  In 2019 the United Nation’s General Assembly resolved to keep 22nd August as a day to commemorate victims of violence based on religion or belief.

We live in a world addicted to violence and where intolerance seems to be on the rise in so many areas of life.  So, today, please take a moment to pray for a better world.  We are grateful to the Revd Stephen Ansa-Addo, for writing this prayer for us.

God of justice and peace,
we grieve that people, here and worldwide,

are threatened, attacked, and killed
because of their religion or belief.

We remember Jewish people facing antisemitism,

Muslims attacked in homes and mosques,

Christians worshipping in secret,

those of other faiths or none
condemned for belief,
and all who live afraid.

Forgive our silence.
Comfort victims and families.
Confront hatred; overturn systems of violence.
Strengthen the United Nations and all who defend the persecuted.
Awaken your Church to speak, protect, welcome,
and stand alongside the suffering,
until violence is overcome
and peace is established.

In Jesus’ name. Amen

With every good wish

Andy
