Church and State
Church and State
Dear Friends,
I hope you enjoyed Seoyoung Kim’s reflections on water and theology.
From tomorrow we turn to a new series of devotions written by the Revd Gethin Rhys about Church and State.
The URC, in our central statements, has a rather nuanced view of the State. “We believe that Christ gives his Church a government distinct from the government of the state. In things that affect obedience to God the Church is not subordinate to the state, but must serve the Lord Jesus Christ, its only Ruler and Head. Civil authorities are called to serve God’s will of justice and peace for all humankind, and to respect the rights of conscience and belief.” (Statement Concerning the Nature, Faith, and Order).
This line often provokes comment from ecumenical colleagues when they attend our inductions and ordinations. The relationship between Church and State has, historically been complex over the next two weeks Gethin will help us reflect on this relationship.
With every good wish
Andy
