Station I Jesus Takes Is Condemned to Death
Station I
Jesus is condemned to death
John 19:1-5
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped. The soldiers made a crown out of thorny branches and put it on his head; then they put a purple robe on him and came to him and said, “Long live the King of the Jews!” And they went up and slapped him. Pilate went back out once more and said to the crowd, “Look, I will bring him out here to you to let you see that I cannot find any reason to condemn him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Look! Here is the man!”
Lamentations 1:12
Does this mean nothing to you that pass by? No one has ever had pain like mine, pain that the Lord brought on me in the time of his anger.
Prayer
Thorn-crowned God, mocked and beaten,
Standing vulnerable before Empire and the world,
Your choices brought you here:
You chose love over hate
And justice over coercion.
Your silent presence challenges the status quo.
We ask that those who use their power to destroy
Will not be indifferent, and will encounter love and justice
So that peace with real security might come to all.
Through Jesus, the wounded healer, we pray. Amen.
